New Year's Goals... WHY?

We're about half way through February and that means most people have already given up on their New Year's Resolutions. There are stats about this all over the internet but you can spot it pretty easily in your own world. The crowd at your gym has started to thin out, your co-workers are no longer talking about their new diet and your facebook friends posted about already falling off the wagon. It's not just others that fall off though, all of us (including you and me) have made resolutions or goals in the past that we didn't stick to. How is it that perfectly capable people are unable to stick with something as simple as following a diet plan or only drinking on the weekends? In the business world we're taught to give S.M.A.R.T. (Simple, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time based) goals to our employees or to ourselves. My daughter is my best teacher

I lost in the first round of the tournament this weekend and it was ugly. I didn't get beat up and my opponent didn't dominate me, I just performed terribly. Losing is bad enough, but as I walked off the mat to see my daughter on the sideline I could see how sad she was that daddy didn't get his hand raised. There's nothing worse than feeling as though you let your daughter down. It's possible that I'm just projecting my own disappointment onto her, but I keep seeing her sad little face in my head. On the drive home there were lots of thoughts running through my head, everything from "I need to start going to Jiu Jitsu 2-3 times a day, 7 days a week" to "fuck it, I'm just going to quit BJJ". Yes, after everything BJJ has done for me and my family I was thinking about quitting. The thought of quitting stayed with me Saturday Night and into the next day. The disappointment I felt in myself was compounded by the fact that I drank way...

Days Off??

Thanksgiving was a few weeks ago so my family and I headed up to the mountains to play in the snow during our well deserved time off from work. A few days before we left I realized that I would be faced with a dilemma: For the previous 6 weeks I’ve been getting up everyday at 4:30am to workout. For the first week or so it was hard to get up that early, hard to workout and hard to continue to train Jiu Jitsu 4-5 days a week. Around week 2 it became much easier and by the middle of the week it was just my new normal. My body felt great, I wasn’t tired, I was sleeping better and it wasn’t hurting my BJJ game. I began to feel better and better. I felt stronger, had more energy and my increased cardio from the morning HIIT workouts was starting to show itself on the mats. After the first few rounds of sparring I noticed that I was still thinking clearly, still seeing opportunities and not breathing nearly as hard as those I was sparring with. Becaus...
